don't worry, this issue / bug can be fixed with simple step. if you use Backtrack 5 GNOME here is the solution.
Open Startup Application on System > Preferences > Startup Application.
Then fill the form with this

Name : Pulseaudio daemon
Command :/usr/bin/pulseaudio
Comment : Start the sound daemon

So it will be like this

Save and reboot your Backtrack

WICD Network Manager is a network manager in Backtrack (KDE). If you want to use your wireless adapter and open WICD you will get error like this "Could not connect to Wicd's D-Bus interface. Check the wicd log for error messages". Don't worry, it's not a fatal error. You can still use your wireless adapter with WICD. But I think this error little bit annoying, ringht? So here is the solution how to solve the WICD Network Manager error.

First open your terminal and reconfigure WICD with this command

dpkg-reconfigure wicd
update-rc.d wicd defaults

Reboot your Backtrack and the error should not occur anymore ;-)

the problem still appear on some Backtrack’s user. I think the problem is in VGA card. If you are using Intel graphic card, may be this tutorial will solve your problem about blank screen on Backtrack 5 when using startx.

First use the Backtrack live CD and boot with it then Configure the Xorg

Xorg -configure

Copy xorg.conf file to /etc/X11

cp /root/xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Open xorg.conf

nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Change "intel" to "vesa" and then save the file
Reboot your Backtrack and then open xorg.conf again

nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Change "vesa" to "intel" and install this intel driver

apt-cache search intel | grep xorg
xserver-xorg-video-intel - X.Org X server -- Intel i8xx, i9xx display driver
xserver-xorg-video-intel-dbg - X.Org X server -- Intel i8xx, i9xx display driver (debug symbols)
xserver-xorg-video-i740 - X.Org X server -- i740 display driver

Install the driver with this command

apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-intel
apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-intel-dbg
apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-i740

Edit grub.cfg

gedit /boot/grub/grub.cfg

Change "text splash vga=791" to "text i915.modeset=1"

When Backtrack 5 released, the most common issue is blank screen when using startx command to start the GUI mode. This common issue caused the VGA on some machine doesn't support. This blank screen issue still found on Backtrack 5 R1 and Backtrack R2. Long time ago when I install Backtrack 5 this problem disappointed me but it's still to fix.

When Backtrack 5 R1 released and I install it on my notebook the blank screen issue has been disappear, but I found this issue on Backtrack 5 R2 when I install it.
But don't worry, same issue has same solution. The simple thing to do is add some code to the Grub option.

1. If this bug appear when you are using Backtrack 5 R2 Live USB you can press "Tab" button on the boot option menu and this code "i915.modeset=1" after "vga = 791 splash text" and the press [enter]

2. If you run Backtrack 5 R2 on Live USB and there's no a problem but after you install it this problem annoying you, you can add the same code on the Grub configuration. You can edit Grub configuration on /boot/grub/grub.cfg and find the Backtrack boot menu and add this code "i915.modeset=1" (same as before) after "vga = 791 splash text".

I guarantee you that the blank screen should be solved because it's word for me.

Many Backtrack’s user have a same problem about the GUI. One of them is blank screen when using startx and can’t load module. If you read the post before, Solve Blank Screen when Using Startx, and it can’t solve your problem maybe the problem is in your VGA card. If you’re using NVIDIA this is the solution of
blank screen on Backtrack 5.





First of all run this command

apt-get install linux-source-$(uname -r)

then

prepare-kernel-sources

open the grub.cfg

nano /boot/grub/grub.cfg

find this line

menuentry 'Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.38' --class ubuntu --class gnu-linux --class gnu --class os { recordfail insmod ext2 set root='(hd0,6)' search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set bb09766b-aa12-4cca-ac61-a29108d69579 linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.38 root=UUID=bb09766b-aa12-4cca-ac61-a29108d69579 ro text splash nomodeset vga=791 initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.38 }

change vga=791 to nouveau.modeset=0. This is the final grub.cfg

Then you must download NVIDIA driver. Search on the Internet and download it. After you download it run the driver like this

./your-NVIDIA-driver --kernel-source-path='/usr/src/linux/'
